21 Weeks

Monkey is currently the size of:

A Large Banana (I’m assuming length-wise)

A Carrot (again, going length-wise here)

Monkey Milestones:

  • Weighs more than 10 ounces (the doctor said she was measuring at 9oz at our our 19 week check-up) and is slightly longer than 7 inches. (hence all the length-wise fruit/veggie comparisons this week)
  • She has eyebrows now! Let’s hope she gets Daddy’s faint eyebrows instead of Mama’s prominent unibrow!
  • B/c she’s a girl (hope y’all didn’t miss that announcement) she currently has her lifetime supply of 6 million (!) eggs.
  • Is kicking up a storm! At least, that’s what I hope kicks feel like. Every time I try to put my hand on my stomach to feel those delicious kicks from the outside, she stops kicking. Although, I did wake up last night to find one of my cats slap up against my belly and Monkey was just a-kicking away at her!

Mommy Milestones:

  • I’m a waddling machine. It takes me a LOT longer to get places right now and I know it’s only going to get worse.
  • I am in no way joking when I say this: Stairs are my mortal enemy. I have to up and down one flight of stairs several times a day for work and every time I get to the top I’m gasping for breath like I’ve just run a 5k or something.
  • I usually fall asleep between 8:30 and 9 nowadays, am up between 1 & 2 to pee, again at 4 to pee, and then up for the day between 6 & 6:30. I have no need for an alarm clock anymore b/c this little girl is my own personal alarm clock.
  • My parents got an above ground pool and it is my little slice of heaven. It helps with my swollen ankles (ankles, what ankles) and it’s fun to feel Monkey swimming around while I’m swimming around.
  • Mosquitos LOVE me right now. I’m attributing it to the extra blood pumping through my body. I’m looking for a supplement or non-toxic repellant if anyone has any suggestions.

Otherwise known as HALFWAY!

Monkey is currently the size of a:

Butternut Squash

Cantaloupe

Monkey Milestones:

  • Monkey can hear me talking! I drove into work this morning by myself and was listening to the Broadway channel and just singing along. Pretty soon, I could feel Monkey just a tap-tap-tapping away!
  • Ooh, Monkey is producing Meconium! Awesome. I look forward to changing those first diapers…
  • Monkey is swallowing away! And apparently can taste now too! Hope Monkey likes spicy food! (who am I kidding, this is my husband’s child after all)
  • Apparently, Monkey’s heartbeat is so strong now that we can hear it with a stethoscope! Quick! Someone get me a stethoscope!
Mommy Milestones:
  • This is more of a Daddy milestone, but Dan felt Monkey kick for the first time! He came to bed Monday night and went to spoon me, as per usual, and felt Monkey kicking! I’m so glad he’s the first besides me to feel little Monkey! I just wish I had been awake!
  • Monkey is kicking up a storm now and just generally swimming all around, all the time. Keep it coming little one! It eases my fears!
  • I made Dan drive across town last night to get me Chicken McNuggets b/c I only at them with hot mustard dipping sauce and I knew that the one right down the street was out. He only grumbled a little bit!

19 Weeks

I would totally go through the usual weekly stuff with you, but you guys…

I GOT TO SEE MY BABY TODAY!

Unfortunately, my appointment was scheduled WAY too early for my stubborn little Monkey and we weren’t able to get any better pictures than this b/c Monkey was laying so close to the placenta.

However, fortunately this means that b/c they weren’t able to get a good reading of Monkey’s face, they’ve scheduled another ultrasound for our next appointment. And we’ve scheduled that one for after lunch. So hopefully, Monkey will be a bit more cooperative.

Also, Monkey’s legs were very firmly crossed this morning so we don’t know if Monkey is a boy or a girl. I still think girl though. I just wouldn’t know what to do with a boy…

16 Weeks

Monkey is currently the size of:

  • an avocado (all the websites agree this week!)

Monkey Milestones:

  • FINGERNAILS! What the holy hell? That’s a frightening thing to think about. I don’t know why, but the thought of my unborn Monkey having fingernails kind of freaks me out.
  • Other than scratchy nails of doom, there’s no other new improvements this week. Monkey is supposedly growing pretty rapidly and is expected to double in weight over the next few weeks!

Mommy Milestones:

  • Have I mentioned that my appetite is back? Even though I never really had morning sickness to speak of, a lot of foods just didn’t appeal to me early on. Now? Holy crap, I will eat pretty much anything you put in front of me! Dan’s favorite thing right now is that when he asks me if I’m hungry, I always reply, “I could eat”.
  • According to all the websites, this is the week I begin to feel “the quickening”. Seeing as I’m a freak of nature, I’ve been feeling movement for a couple of weeks now. But I am looking forward to feeling it much more often!
  • Dan and I just got back from a trip to Ohio and my whole family just couldn’t believe how HUGE I already am. That’s probably more to do with my eating habits, but still. This is like the only time n my life I will ever be excited to have people telling me how big I am!
  • Of course, the horror stories are also starting. Why do people feel the need to freak preggos out? Not cool.

Monkey is currently the size of a:

  • beefsteak tomato
  • apple
  • grapefruit

Monkey Milestones:

  • Even though Monkey’s eyes are still fused shut, s/he can still sense light! A little part of me wants to start shining a flashlight on my abdomen to see if I can make Monkey move away from it!
  • Monkey is now breathing amniotic fluid through his/her nose.
  • Monkey is forming taste buds! Perhaps I should start eating a more refined cuisine?

Mommy Milestones:

  • I know it’s early, but I swear I can feel Monkey every now and again. Just slight pressure every now and again about halfway between my belly button and lady parts.
  • I wake up every morning at 4am to pee. That’s fun.
  • I tend to bite off a few heads these days…Ah hormones!
  • It’s my 28th birthday!

14 Weeks

According to all sources, I am now firmly into my second trimester!

I read about 4-5 different websites and books for my weekly updates.

I always get the Babyfit update first thing on Thursday mornings.

According to Babyfit, my baby is:

  • hitting a growth spurt and is between 3.25 and 4 inches.
  • weighs as much as an ounce!

After I read that update, I head over to Amalah‘s to check out my current week on her “Zero to Forty” Pregnancy Calendar. According to Amalah, my baby is:

  • about the size of my fist!
  • or a peach if we want to go with fruit references!

About the time I get into work I get my update from Babycenter. They tell me that my baby is:

  • growing fine, downy hair called lanugo
  • squinting, frowning, peeing and possibly sucking his/her thumb!

Then it’s time for the update from The Bump, which usually varies in their opinions of my baby’s development. I’ve noticed it’s usually behind a week or two in fruit comparisons. According to The Bump my baby is the size of a Lemon. And according to everyone else, I moved on from that citric fruit almost two weeks ago!

I also have two baby books at home that give me weekly updates as well. I’m a little bit lax on keeping up with those and usually read 2-3 weeks worth of development at a time.

What’s great is that all of these websites (and books too probably) all tell me I should be starting to show by now. What do you think?

I’ve actually been showing for quite a while now. I blame the vanishing twin!

(This next part is a bit whispery…)

I think I felt Monkey move last night. The sensation woke me from a dead sleep and felt like several ripples across my abdomen. I suppose it could have been gas but as my Mom put it when I told her about it “has gas ever woken you up before?”

So, yay! That’s exciting and a bit early but totally welcome! Keep it up Monkey!
